Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, Barrett Cobb began playing the flute at age ten. When she was in high school she won the Nashville Symphony’s concerto contest and twice appeared as soloist in Frank Martin’s Ballade with the orchestra, under the direction of Willis Page. While in high school she also won the concerto contest at Transylvania Music Camp and performed the first movement of Mozart’s G Major Concerto with the Transylvania Symphony, under the direction of James Christian Pfohl.

Ms. Cobb received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory and her Masters of Musical Arts degree from the Yale School of Music.

She has held the position of principal flute with many orchestras, including the orchestra for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Lubo Opera, Opera North, Bel Canto Opera, the American Chamber Orchestra, the Contreras Chamber Orchestra, and, for three years, the Orquesta Sinfonica de Colombia.

While living in Bogota, Ms. Cobb co-founded the woodwind quintet, El Quinteto de las Americas This group toured Colombia and had a bi-weekly radio show. It subsequently relocated to New York City where it became known as the Quintet of the Americas. Ms. Cobb performed with the Quintet for many years in concerts throughout the United States, under the auspices of Columbia Artists Management, as well as in New York City, where it was in residence at the Center for Inter-American Relations and Hunter College. Other chamber music groups with which Ms. Cobb has performed include The Goliard Chamber Soloists, the Ensemble Neuer Music (Hanover, Germany), the Southerly Winds Trio, and various ensembles directed by Jens Nygaard in connection for his “Lest We Forget” series.

Ms. Cobb has performed as soloist in both Bach’s Brandenburg #5 and Frank Martin’s Ballade with the American Chamber Orchestra, Charles Barker conductor; Bach’s Suite in B Minor for Solo Flute, Strings and Continuo with the Contreras Chamber Orchestra, Jose Contreras, conductor; The Vivaldi Piccolo Concerto in C Major with the Westchester Chamber Orchestra, Jens Nygaard conductor; and Tres Canciones para Flauta y Orquesta by Alfredo Aragan with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Colombia, Bruce Morton Wright, conductor.
